- **Fasting on Eid al-Fitr is haram ** (prohibited) — one of the five days on which fasting is forbidden in Islam.

- Following Eid, the next major Islamic event in 2026 is [Eid al-Adha on 27 May 2026](/qurbani-2026). See the full [Islamic calendar 2026](/islamic-hijri-calendar-2026).

## When is Eid al-Fitr 2026?

Eid al-Fitr 2026 falls on **Friday 20 March 2026 **, corresponding to 1 Shawwal 1447 AH. The date is confirmed by the sighting of the new crescent moon (hilal) at the end of Ramadan — expected on the evening of 19 March 2026. In the UK, some mosques and Islamic authorities follow their own moon sighting process, meaning Eid could fall on 19 or 20 March depending on local confirmation. Muslims should follow the announcement of their local mosque or national Islamic authority.

## What is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr (عيد الفطر) — literally "the festival of breaking the fast" — is one of Islam's two major annual celebrations, alongside Eid al-Adha. It falls on 1 Shawwal, the first day of the month that follows Ramadan, marking the conclusion of a full month of fasting, prayer, and intensified worship.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ established Eid al-Fitr as a day of communal joy and gratitude when he arrived in Madinah and found the people celebrating certain days. He told them: _"Allah has replaced those two days for you with something better: the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr" _ (Abu Dawud 1134).

> “Allah has replaced those two days for you with something better: the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr. — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Abu Dawud 1134 ”

## How is Eid al-Fitr observed in the UK?

In the UK, Eid al-Fitr 2026 is observed across Muslim communities through a sequence of sunnah acts: waking early and performing ghusl (full ablution); wearing best or new clothes; eating something sweet (typically dates) before the Eid prayer; paying Zakat al-Fitr if not already paid; reciting takbeer on the way to the prayer; attending the Eid congregational prayer; greeting fellow Muslims with "Eid Mubarak" or _"Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum" _; and visiting family, sharing food and gifts.

## What is Zakat al-Fitr and when is it due in 2026?

Zakat al-Fitr (also called Sadaqat al-Fitr or Fitrana) is an obligatory charity that every Muslim must pay at the end of Ramadan. It serves two purposes: purifying the fasting person's fast from any lapses, and providing for the poor so they can celebrate Eid.

The Prophet ﷺ said: _"The Messenger of Allah obligated Zakat al-Fitr — a purification for the fasting person from idle speech and obscenities, and as food for the poor. Whoever pays it before the Eid prayer, it is an accepted Zakat; whoever pays it after the prayer, it is just a regular charity" _ (Abu Dawud 1609).

In 2026, Zakat al-Fitr must be paid before the Eid prayer on **20 March 2026 **. The recommended practice is to pay it 1–2 days before Eid so that it reaches the recipients in time. The amount is one Sa' (approximately 2.5–3 kg) of the local staple food per person, or its monetary equivalent. [Pay Zakat al-Fitr through HNCO](/zakat/al-fitr).

## Why is fasting on Eid al-Fitr forbidden?

Fasting on the day of Eid al-Fitr is strictly **haram ** (prohibited) in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ explicitly forbade fasting on the two Eid days: _"No fasting is permissible on two days: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha" _ (Sahih Bukhari 1990). Scholars explain that fasting on Eid is a rejection of Allah's gift — He has invited His servants to His banquet after a month of fasting; to decline by fasting would be disrespectful. Eid al-Fitr is one of the five days on which fasting is categorically forbidden, alongside Eid al-Adha and the three days of Tashreeq (11–13 Dhul Hijjah).

## What should Muslims do after Eid al-Fitr 2026?

The month of Shawwal that follows Eid al-Fitr carries its own recommended act: the Prophet ﷺ said, _"Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six fasts of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the whole year" _ (Sahih Muslim 1164). These six fasts can be done on any days of Shawwal after Eid, in any order. After Shawwal, the [Islamic calendar 2026](/islamic-hijri-calendar-2026) leads toward Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah, Hajj season, and [Eid al-Adha on 27 May 2026](/qurbani-2026).
