The **four sacred months in Islam ** — **Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah, [Muharram](/what-is-muharram), and Rajab ** — are established in the Quran (9:36) as months in which good deeds earn amplified reward, sins carry greater weight, and conflict is forbidden; three fall consecutively and one stands alone, each with its own key observances.

> “**New here? ** Read our complete [Muharram 2026 guide](/muharram-2026) — pillar resource covering dates, Ashura, fasting, sadaqah and the full month-by-month plan. ”

## Key Takeaways

- The four sacred months (Ashur al-Hurum): **Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah, Muharram **, and **Rajab ** — Quran 9:36.
- Three are consecutive; one (Rajab) stands alone in the middle of the Islamic year.
- In 2026: Dhul Hijjah (Hajj + Eid al-Adha) → [Muharram](/muharram-2026) ( [Ashura 25 Jun](/ashura-2026)) → Rajab (Dec 2026).
- Good deeds earn amplified reward in all four months; sins carry heavier weight.
- The Quran commands: **"do not wrong yourselves" ** during the sacred months (9:36).
- [Sadaqah](/sadaqah-muharram) in any sacred month earns the sacred-month multiplier at the moment of giving.
- Full dates: [Islamic Hijri Calendar 2026](/islamic-hijri-calendar-2026).

## What are the four sacred months in Islam?

The four sacred months — known in Arabic as _Ashur al-Hurum _ (أشهر الحرم), literally "the sacred months" — are Dhul Qadah (11th month), Dhul Hijjah (12th month), Muharram (1st month), and Rajab (7th month). Three of the four are consecutive, running from Dhul Qadah through Muharram. The fourth, Rajab, stands alone in the middle of the Islamic year between Jumada al-Akhira and Sha'ban.

> “Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve \[lunar\] months... of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. — Quran, Surah At-Tawbah 9:36 ”

## What are each of the four sacred months and their meanings?

- **Dhul Qadah ** (11th month — ذُو الْقَعْدَة): "The month of sitting" — warfare ceased for travel to Hajj. Pre-Hajj preparation month.
- **Dhul Hijjah ** (12th month — ذُو الْحِجَّة): "Possessor of the Hajj" — month of Hajj pilgrimage, Eid al-Adha, [Qurbani](/qurbani-2026), Day of Arafah.
- **[Muharram](/what-is-muharram)** (1st month — مُحَرَّم): "The sacred/forbidden" — [Islamic New Year](/islamic-new-year-2026); best month for voluntary fasting; [Ashura](/ashura-2026) on 10th day.
- **Rajab ** (7th month — رَجَب): "To honour" — mid-year sacred month; Isra wal Mi'raj; voluntary fasting.

## Where are the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran?

The foundational Quranic reference is Surah At-Tawbah (9:36), which states that twelve months exist in Allah's register since creation, four of which are sacred. A second reference is Surah At-Tawbah (9:5). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ named all four explicitly in his Farewell Sermon hadith (Sahih Bukhari 4662): _"Three are in succession: Dhul Qa'dah, Dhul Hijjah, and Al-Muharram, and one is Rajab Mudar." _

## Why are the four months sacred in Islam?

Classical scholars of tafsir — including Ibn Kathir on Quran 9:36 — explain the theological rationale as both practical and spiritual. The three consecutive months (Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah, Muharram) were designated to allow pilgrims to travel to Makkah for Hajj, perform the pilgrimage, and return home safely without threat of tribal warfare. Rajab was added in the middle of the year for Umrah travellers.

The deeper spiritual significance is that Allah designated these months as a gift — amplified seasons for worship, charity, and nearness to Him. The Quran's command "do not wrong yourselves" (9:36) applies specifically to these months, signalling that both sins and good deeds carry greater spiritual weight within them.

## When are the four sacred months in 2026?

- **Dhul Qadah 1447 ** — 19 Apr – 17 May 2026 — Pre-Hajj; Umrah season; travel preparation.
- **Dhul Hijjah 1447 ** — 18 May – 15 Jun 2026 — Day of Arafah (26 May); [Eid al-Adha & Qurbani (27 May)](/qurbani-2026); Hajj (25–30 May).
- **[Muharram 1448](/muharram-2026)** — 16 Jun – 14 Jul 2026 — [Islamic New Year (16 Jun)](/islamic-new-year-2026); [Ashura (25 Jun)](/ashura-2026).
- **Rajab 1448 ** — 10 Dec 2026 – 8 Jan 2027 — Sacred month; voluntary fasting; Isra wal Mi'raj (following year).

## What should Muslims do in the four sacred months?

- **Increase voluntary fasting ** — Sahih Muslim 1163 (for Muharram especially). All four months are excellent for voluntary fasts.
- **Give [sadaqah](/sadaqah)** — Quran 9:36 amplified-reward principle applies to all good deeds.
- **Avoid all sin ** — Quran 9:36: "do not wrong yourselves." Sins are heavier in sacred months.
- **Increase dhikr and Quran recitation ** — opportunities for intensified worship.
- **Month-specific acts ** — Hajj/Qurbani (Dhul Hijjah); [Ashura fast](/ashura-fasting) (Muharram).
