The ceremony, which was held at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel on the 31st January, is an annual event which recognises the success of individuals, groups and companies throughout the UK. Established in 2013, the awards comprise organisations across business, the arts, sport, and of course charitable causes, such as HNCO. HNCO’s director and trustee Gulshan Rehman, was already thrilled with the news when the event’s organisers Oceanic Events got in touch to notify her of the nomination, and therefore was even more delighted when the group’s name was called out on stage. She said: “We already think we’ve had the best year yet at HNCO since we officially registered as a non-profit organisation in October 2017. The award nomination news came just after a fantastic few days of fundraising bag packing at Nelson Morrisons and Colne Sainsburys, where we raised over £2,000, so it was the ‘cherry on top’ of a wonderful 12 months. To come home with the ‘Highly Commended’ prize is a dream come true and the evening was a lovely way for the team and volunteers to spend some well-earned ‘down time’ with each other. “It’s a cliche, but No organisation carries out work to win an award, the act of helping others is reward enough. Anyone in the category could’ve won the prize and everyone on the shortlist is worthy of praise and recognition. That said, we are over the moon to win, and dedicate the prize to everyone we help and everyone who helps us.” Gulshan’s co-trustee and friend Sheraz Yakub attended the evening - along with eight other team members and volunteers who have each taken part in various projects that collectively contributed to HNCO receiving its nomination, and prize. Collecting the certificate on behalf of the team, Sheraz commented: “There would be no HNCO without Shaykh Hisham Kabbani and Hajjah Naziha - after whom the organisation is named. Everything we do and everyone we help is a continuation of their legacy of humanity and philanthropy.” As a non-profit organisation, HNCO assists the advancement of education and awareness of Islam as a religion by explaining how Muslims honour religious obligations for the better of others. Through HNCO’s press and promotional materials, the organisation also explains how and why these obligations are fulfilled, further helping to promote good relations within the local community and on a global level. Likewise, the vast majority of fundraising by HNCO is met through religious observations such as Zakat, Zakat al Fitr, Fidya, Kaffarah, Dhul Hijjah, Qurbani, and the sale of Medina dates during Ramadan. The allocation of fundraising, however, will never be based on race, religion, creed, colour, or class. HNCO is a proud ‘interfaith’ non-profit organisation committed to efficient, compassionate allocation of donations; the overall endeavours of the organisation and the message it wants to spread are focused and unified — help where it’s needed most. Gulshan added: “As a team we’ve worked on projects at home and abroad throughout the year.
