During the holy month of Ramadan, sharing with others less fortunate than ourselves becomes even more important. As well as helping others, voluntary giving also benefit the donor, by reminding them to think of their Muslim brothers and sisters during the holy month, and throughout the year. Just as importantly, fasting during Ramadan and observing all the religious obligations that the Holy Month includes is a very significant time of year for people all over the world. Breaking fast each evening with family and friends, and when the new moon arrives; celebrating Eid with loved ones, plentiful food and gifts is a very special time. Not everyone will experience this at Eid, however, and all too often it is through no fault of their own. Following several partnership programs with the domestic abuse refuge Safenet, HNCO therefore has this year provided toys and hot food parcels for children and women at the Burnley and Pendle locations. The gifts were donated unwrapped so that the Safenet team could sort them into appropriate categories and wrap them in time for the annual party. HNCO’s Gulshan Rehman wished to thank the donors who provided the funds to buy the toys and food, and the volunteers that prepared the meals to be enjoyed by Safenet service users. Gulshan also commented: “No one deserves the ordeal that Safenet users have experienced, least of all the children involved in domestic abuse. It is a heartbreaking thought that some parents will feel unable to provide Eid presents for their sons and daughters, so to be able to provide a small token to be enjoyed is a pleasure. We have worked with Safenet on several occasions in the past, and the team there does some outstanding work removing people from risk and protecting them from harm.
