Dr Nour has made a visit to the UK - from his home in Illinois - to see some of the great work the organisation is doing across the North West and beyond, in preparation for Qurbani 2019 and Eid al Adha. And, as Dr Nour’s two-week trip coincided with a BBC Radio Lancashire ‘pop-up studio’ in Burnley Mechanics; the organisation ambassador joined HNCO’s director Gulshan Rehman and Marketing Manager Gemma Emmerson for an interview with Gilly and Nish - John Gilmore and Nishma Hindocha - on the station’s popular afternoon slot. There was plenty to talk about as Dr Nour and Gulshan had just returned from Pendleside Hospice, where they had presented a cheque for £2,000, along with HNCO teddy bears, and ‘treat and toiletry’ hampers, thanks to the kind support of donors from and since Ramadan . As well as speaking about the day’s earlier events, Gilly and Nish asked about the organisation as a whole, Dr Nour’s visit to the UK, and about the work HNCO carries out in the local community; specifically, its ‘Helping the Homeless’ projects, as prompted by Dr Nour mentioning that on touching down at the airport, he was immediately whisked away to Manchester’s Piccadilly Gardens and “put to work” at one of HNCO and Organic Soul’s collaborative Friday night homeless feeds. The team - who regularly join up with Organic Soul, after a chance encounter during Ramadan, this May, to serve hot food and hand out snack packs to some of the city’s most vulnerable men and women - also took boxes of clothing on this occasion, which service users could help themselves to and take away. Speaking at the ‘pop-up studio’, Gulshan Rehman, director of HNCO, commented: “We receive donations from all over the world, and reciprocate with aid all over the world, but there is still a lot of work to be done at a local level. We may have a global outreach, but we are also very proud of our roots in the North West and that’s why the team works very hard, every day, to make our presence felt in the community. “Recently we spent a Friday afternoon visiting local hospices and hospices to introduce ourselves, and get to know the staff and service users. That, in turn, led to our visit this morning to Pendleside with the gifts and donation cheque. “As a small charity, we rely on the local media to help us spread the message of HNCO. We have to be careful with our resources, of course, so there is a fine line between promoting our cause, while keeping a tight hold on the purse strings to make sure we have enough in the pot to help those who need it. That’s why we are so grateful to Gilly and Nish for inviting us down to Burnley Mechanics today, and letting us speak on their show. We are really looking forward to next time.” Following the short BBC Radio Lancs interview, which took place at around 3.30pm on Tuesday 6th August, Gilly and Nish re-booked the three guests back in for a follow up in September, to coincide with Dr Nour’s return visit.
