Hajjah Naziha Organisation (HNCO) is a Lancashire-founded non-profit organisation with a global outreach. Just five minutes on its website is all it takes to view the projects HNCO is involved with; as vast and varied as building a mosque in Malawi to sending teddy bears to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. The diverse portfolio of permanent projects and more ‘ad hoc’ appeals including emergency aid and disaster relief are all unified by a motto of ‘Help where it’s needed most’. This all-encompassing attitude to welfare also means, however, that a one-size-does-not-fit-all approach needs to be adopted for raising funds too. And, while the vast majority of fundraising by HNCO is met through religious observations such as Zakat, Zakat al Fitr, Fidya, Kaffarah, Dhul Hijjah, Qurbani, and the sale of Medina dates, during Ramadan, collection boxes in local shops, offices and staff rooms etc are commonplace, and the team organises traditional fundraising methods such as supermarket bag packing, bucket collections and sponsored events where permissible, due to current guidelines. With all this in mind, the team received a very welcome telephone call recently from one HNCO supporter who had taken it upon herself to raise funds for her favourite cause. Not only was the person who took the call incredibly grateful for the offer of sending some money into the organisation, they were pleasantly surprised to find out that the donor was just four years old. It was in fact four-year-old Khadijah’s mother, Mrs Maqbool who made the call on her daughter’s behalf, explaining that Khadijah had collected £70 and wished to send it into HNCO to be put towards one of the organisation’s ongoing campaigns. A HNCO went to collect the funds, meet Khadijah and deliver a little package to say Thank You; including one of HNCO’s teddy bears, a money box and a letter signed by all the team. HNCO’s Gulshan Rehman commented: “All donations to HNCO are very gratefully received, especially in the past year when it’s been really tough on everyone. Even small change can make a big difference to our service users and we thank all supporters at home and abroad who generously send money into our organisation. “This particular donation really stood out to us though and made our day at HNCO HQ. For such a young person to motivate herself to raise money for charity is wonderful, and we are absolutely honoured that she chose HNCO to gift the funds to. Everyone at HNCO sends their sincere thanks to Khadijah and her mum for getting in touch with us.
