HNCO attend weekly and bi-weekly food handouts in Burnley and Manchester, feeding the homeless and providing them with a friendly face to interact with. Recently the organisation has had a huge drive to produce and hand out coronavirus hygiene kits to rough sleepers, to help them stay safe as the virus takes hold of Britain. But the organisation are finding their movements hampered by the lockdown sanctions forced through by the government and fear that they will soon be unable to hand out food and hygiene kits. “With this project we have had to do a lot in a short space of time because things are changing by the day,” charity founder Gulshan Rehman told LancsLive. “The sanctions being put down are limiting us a bit but we are pushing through. “We have been doing food hand outs in Burnley and Manchester for a while but a few weeks ago we started to here people talking about a possible lockdown. “I just thought: ‘well what is going to happen to the homeless people? They need to be helped, prevention is better than the cure.” team member, Gemma Emmerson added: “We started to think; could we be of further help during this confusing and scary time? “It was a case of: ‘what can we do to help?’ so we started putting hygiene packages together.” HNCO is a non-profit organisation based in Nelson, Burnley, and founded by the retired teacher Hajjah Naziah, a prominent advocate of women’s rights and education in Libya. It operates on various charitable projects worldwide but has an ongoing drive to support homeless people in Burnley and Manchester . With rough sleepers voicing their concerns over the Covid-19 outbreak, the organisation have been raising money to buy and put together hygiene kits for the homeless. “The packs include tissues, antibacterial wipes, antibacterial soap, a bottle of water and a leaflet of information,” said Gulshan. “The leaflets are from the NHS and give them some advice on what to do to stay safe, I think they were gratefully received.” “You have to remember that the service users we have are in a completely different situation to everyone else. “They are even more confused than us, they don’t have access to information, or running water, and they have nowhere to self isolate or even wash their hands.” At the moment the organisation are still able to take part in their weekly handouts, although there are caveats to that. Although they could be forced to completely cancel their handouts as Covid-19 forces the UK government into ever more stringent measures.
