As well as having an untold impact on mental health, for those in prison who respect religious observances, time spent alone and apart from their like-minded peers could prove detrimental to their psychological wellbeing and overall rehabilitation. ![](/legacy/c4469167-HNCO-Prisons-posts2-1024x1024.jpg) As a proud North West-established organisation, HNCO is committed to community outreach. In its own mission statement, HNCO pledges to assist the advancement of education and awareness of Islam as a religion by explaining how Muslims honour religious obligations for the better of others. And, while the vast majority of fundraising by HNCO is met through religious observations such as Zakat, Zakat al Fitr, Fidya, Kaffarah, Dhul Hijjah, Qurbani and the sale of Ajwah Medina dates, during Ramadan , allocation of funds will never be based on race, religion, creed, colour or class. ![](/legacy/dc32053c-HNCO-Prisons-posts3-1024x1024.jpg) When it comes to education, HNCO continues the legacy of compassion, kindness and generosity of the very lady it is named after. Hajjah Naziha Adil Kabbani is a descendant of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), through both her maternal and paternal lineages. She is married to Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani, Shaykh Nazim’s deputy and spiritual heir. For more than twenty years, Shaykh Hisham and Hajjah Naziha have advanced Shaykh Nazim’s legacy by directing various emergency disaster relief and humanitarian across the world. A remarkable woman in her own right, Hajjah Naziha has dedicated her life’s work to education and empowerment for all, no matter their sex or skin colour, nor their personal, financial or religious circumstances. HNCO’s Gulshan Rehman commented: “When a charity is committed to education and empowerment, and by their own admission declare ‘help where it’s needed most’, this help does not end at the gates of a prison. There is a passage from the Quran Al-Insan 76:8, which reads “And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive.” The men that currently reside in HMP Buckley Hall arguably need our help more than ever at the moment. The first set of books sent in by HNCO were so well-received that after reading them, they were being passed around to people who also wanted to read them. “The past year of Lockdown has affected us all in very different ways. For those in prison, not only have visitation sessions been reduced or cancelled altogether, activities and mixing with other inmates have also been forced to cease. While this is understandable for the safety and physical health of everyone involved, when it comes to the mental wellbeing and spiritual welfare of the men in HMP Buckley Hall, HNCO was becoming increasingly concerned.” Indeed, HNCO is avid in its own education and was motivated in part due to Ministry of Justice report published in August 2016. The review, led by Ian Acheson focussed on Islamist extremism in prisons, probation and youth justice. In its summary, the review concludes that “IE prisoners are isolated from the mainstream” and cites “tackling the availability and source of extremist literature” as a principal recommendation. Yet, “throughout the review the team emphasised the importance of faith to prisoners, and its potential to transform lives for the better.” “By providing a small token such as a box of books, we are steering readers towards mainstream Islam and reminding of what life can be like ‘on the outside’. Furthermore, with nothing but time on their hands at the moment, reading and education is a wholesome and worthwhile endeavour to help pass the day and hopefully lead to their overall rehabilitation in preparation of their release. We want them to think about their family and friends, contemplate the circumstances that led them to their current situation and perhaps this will motivate them to get home and stay home.” “Over the coming weeks, as Muslims start to get ready for Ramadan, the HNCO team is also starting to organise food and prayer packs for the prisoners. The Holy Month, which this year is observed between the 12 April and 12 May not only serves as a period for people all over the world to fast, pray, and sacrifice, it also celebrates love and unity with family and friends and the wider community. Yet, some of the men in Buckley Hall will be worried about their second Ramadan behind lock and key during a pandemic. As we speak we are arranging for Masallah - prayer mats, Miswak - natural toothbrushes, Tasbih - prayer beads, more books, plus food such as dates and frozen meals to observe Suhoor and Iftar. Donors can purchase one of these for £5 and HNCO will send it as a gift to Buckley Hall, on their behalf.” Since it was founded in 2017, HNCO has worked on various education programmes across the globe including orphanages in Pakistan, women’s classes, activity packs for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and specialised creative books for residential homes and hospices local to the organisation’s HQ in Lancashire, to name a few. While each of these projects is as vast and varied as the next, the term ‘Education For All’ means precisely that to everyone involved.
