When a prominent member of HNCO (Hajjah Naziha Organisation) privately commissioned two portraits of Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani from British Pakistani designer Sonia Nisa and displayed them at the organisation’s HQ around two years ago, the canvasses fast became a favourite talking point for team members, volunteers and visitors alike. Seeing an image of the Shaykh every day served as constant encouragement in all the organisation’s endeavours, while the stunning style of the black and white painting - including hand-scripted calligraphy - caught the attention of any passer by and gleaned many comments and compliments. As such, when HNCO started to think about a new ambassador for the organisation and pondered on a person who emulated all of the organisation’s morals, emulated the mission of the organisation, and had a effervescence that would make the world pay attention, the first choice had been obvious; right there in the canvasses that the team admired and were inspired by every day. Sonia Nisa, is a British Pakistani artist, calligrapher and designer, currently living in Doha with her husband and daughter. Her passion for art started at the tender age of six-years-old and Sonia has honed her craft over more than two decades. Completely self-taught, Sonia believes her talent is God-given as she has never received formal training yet her work has led her to a face-to-face reception with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. Sonia’s unique style combines monochrome paintings of prominent people and places, with her own flair of calligraphy interwoven into every piece. Her ‘catalogue’ includes portraits of Bob Marley, Muhammad Ali and Mahatma Gandhi, horse and lion paintings, and most recently, a stunning composition of the Kaaba, Mecca. HNCO’s Gulshan Rehman commented: “HNCO is incredibly proud and grateful to welcome Sonia Nisa as our new Ambassador. As an artist Nisa is internationally renowned and respected. Beyond her artwork, however, HNCO was immensely impressed by her outlook on life, her self-motivation, and perhaps most of all the heart that shines through every single one of her pieces. HNCO’s patron Hajjah Naziha is a wonderful woman who displays her strength and humanity through her selfless acts of kindness, warmth and wisdom.
