It comes from Arabic root word ‘qurb,’ which translates to ‘nearness.’ The purpose of Qurbani is to obtain nearness to Allah and prove the openness and willingness to sacrifice and do what it takes to reach that closeness, as the Prophet Ibrahim had done centuries before. ## WHAT IS THE MEANING OF QURBANI? Qurbani is the word that gets used to describe the sacrifice of an animal. During Eid ul Adha, a blessed animal such as a goat or sheep, gets sacrificed to Allah to commemorate the completion of Hajj pilgrimage. The act gets done as a way to honor the Prophet Ibrahim, who sacrificed his son for the sake of God. ZAID BIN ARQAM NARRATED: THE COMPANIONS OF THE PROPHET OF ALLAH SAID: > “O PROPHET OF ALLAH, WHAT ARE THESE SACRIFICES? ” O PROPHET OF ALLAH, WHAT ARE THESE SACRIFICES? HE SAID: > “THE SUNNAH OF YOUR FATHER, IBRAHIM. ” THE SUNNAH OF YOUR FATHER, IBRAHIM. THEY SAID: > “WHAT IS THERE FOR US IN THEM, O PROPHET OF ALLAH? ” WHAT IS THERE FOR US IN THEM, O PROPHET OF ALLAH? > “FOR EVERY SINGLE HAIR OF THE WOOL, ONE GOODNESS. ” FOR EVERY SINGLE HAIR OF THE WOOL, ONE GOODNESS. (IBN MAJAH) ### WHO SHOULD PERFORM QURBANI? The general rule of thumb is that Qurbani should get performed by adults who can afford the sacrifice, and who are of sound mind. While the Hanafi ulema state that Qurbani is obligatory, there are schools of jurisprudence who believe it to be a voluntary act that should get performed. Questions or doubts can get directed to local mosques. ### WHAT TYPES OF ANIMALS GET SACRIFICED AT UDHIYAH? The animals that get selected as a sacrifice are typically goats, sheep, camels, buffalo, or cattle (cows and bulls.) The Qurbani rules state that they can be either male or female; however, they need to be in good health, free of any handicaps, disabilities, or sicknesses, and above a specified age. Goats and sheep are required to be at least one, cattle at least two years, while camels need to be at least five years of age. ### HOW MANY ANIMALS SHOULD GET SACRIFICED? The amount of animals that should get sacrificed depends on the number of individuals making it, or having it made on their behalf. The animals have shares, so a small animal such as a sheep or a goat is one Qurbani, while larger livestock such as cattle is seven. A single individual can have their Qurbani fulfilled with a sheep or a goat, where up to seven people can have it filled with camel, buffalo, or cattle. A person can make as many Qurbani as they desire, and can do so on behalf of other individuals, including the deceased. ### WHAT HAPPENS DURING QURBANI? The slaughter of the sacrificed animal typically happens before the first Eid Salah. Once the chosen animal(s) have gotten sacrificed, it is equally divided up into three parts to share accordingly. One part of the meat goes to the home, one part is spread out amongst friends and family, and the third part gets donated to the poor and less fortunate. The process of sharing the sacrificed meat is to remind people of the duties towards family, neighbors, and humankind. In more modern acts, the meat from the Qurban gets distributed amongst those who have the highest need instead of a three-part equal division. ### CAN MONETARY DONATIONS GET USED INSTEAD? Yes. Unlike other parts of the world, there is a lack of poverty in Western countries, which causes many Muslims to perform their Qurbani out of the country, where it is needed most. Organizations such as HNCO are there to take donations that then get put towards the purchase of an animal suitable for sacrifice. One thing to keep in mind is that Qurbani prices do vary depending on the part of the world the slaughter is happening in. Individuals can consult with their mosque to find suitable organizations to assist with their Qurbani donations. ### WHEN DOES QURBANI GET PERFORMED? The Qurban sacrifice can get performed from the tenth day of Dhul-Hijjah until the sun sets on the 12th. It gets recommended that Qurbani is performed immediately after completing the Eid-ul-Adha prayers.
