# Ajwa Dates — Blessed Dates of Madinah

Ajwa dates from Madinah — hadith, health benefits, how to eat them and how HNCO distributes dates in Ramadan food parcels. Donate Sadaqah today.

## Ajwa Dates — The Blessed Dates of Madinah

**Ajwa dates ** are a soft, dark variety grown only in the city of Madinah, Saudi Arabia. Treasured by Muslims worldwide, they hold a unique status in Islamic tradition thanks to authentic hadith narrated about them by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. At HNCO we share the love of Ajwa as part of our Ramadan and Sadaqah work, distributing dates to families in need across the UK and abroad.

## What Are Ajwa Dates?

Ajwa is a small to medium-sized date with a deep blackish-brown colour, fine wrinkled skin and a soft, almost dry texture. The flavour is rich, mildly sweet and reminiscent of caramel and prune — quite different from sweeter varieties like Medjool. Ajwa palms are cultivated almost exclusively in the date farms surrounding Madinah, which is why genuine Ajwa is sometimes referred to as the _Holy Date of Madinah _.

Because supply is limited and demand is high, especially during **Ramadan ** and the **Hajj ** season, authentic Ajwa is more expensive than common varieties. When buying, look for soft, intact fruit with a matte finish and a clear origin label from Madinah.

## Ajwa Dates in Hadith

> “Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them. — Sahih al-Bukhari 5445 ”

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ specifically praised Ajwa dates in several authentic narrations. In another hadith he ﷺ said, _'Ajwa dates are from Paradise' _ (Jami\` at-Tirmidhi 2066). For these reasons, many Muslims make a habit of eating seven Ajwa dates on an empty stomach each morning, particularly during Ramadan.

## Health Benefits of Ajwa Dates

- **Rich in antioxidants ** — high in polyphenols and flavonoids that help fight oxidative stress.
- **Heart support ** — studies suggest Ajwa may help support healthy cholesterol levels and arterial function.
- **Natural energy ** — a fast-releasing source of glucose and fructose, ideal for breaking the fast at Iftar.
- **Fibre & minerals ** — provides dietary fibre, potassium, magnesium and iron.
- **Low glycaemic load ** — sweet but slower to spike blood sugar than refined sugar when eaten with water or nuts.

## How to Eat Ajwa Dates

The Sunnah way to break a fast is with an odd number of dates — typically three or seven — followed by a glass of water. During Ramadan, many Muslims open Iftar with Ajwa for its blessed status, then move on to lighter, savoury foods before Maghrib prayer.

Outside of Ramadan, try eating seven Ajwa on an empty stomach each morning following the Prophet's ﷺ recommendation. They also pair beautifully with a small handful of almonds or walnuts, a cup of Arabic coffee, or stuffed with tahini for a wholesome snack.

## Ajwa Dates & Ramadan Sadaqah

Distributing dates to those breaking their fast is one of the most rewarded acts in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said, _'Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like that of the fasting person, without any reduction in the fasting person's reward' _ (Jami\` at-Tirmidhi 807).

HNCO includes dates — including Ajwa where possible — in our Ramadan food parcels delivered across Pakistan, Bangladesh and the UK. Your **Sadaqah ** or **Zakat ** helps us send food packs containing dates, rice, flour, oil, lentils and essentials to families who would otherwise break their fast with very little.

## How to Spot Genuine Ajwa Dates

- **Origin ** — packaging should clearly state Madinah, Saudi Arabia.
- **Colour ** — true Ajwa is dark brown to almost black, never reddish.
- **Texture ** — soft and slightly dry with fine wrinkles; not sticky or syrupy.
- **Size ** — relatively small compared to Medjool or Safawi.
- **Taste ** — gentle sweetness with hints of caramel; never overly sugary.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How many Ajwa dates should I eat per day?

Following the Sunnah, seven Ajwa dates in the morning is the recommended amount. Three is also common at Iftar. Anything more is permissible but watch portion sizes due to natural sugar content.

### Are Ajwa dates only grown in Madinah?

Authentic Ajwa is cultivated in and around Madinah, Saudi Arabia. Similar varieties grown elsewhere should not be sold as Ajwa.

### Can children eat Ajwa dates?

Yes — Ajwa is a wholesome natural food suitable for older children. For toddlers, remove the stone and chop finely to prevent choking.

### Can I give Ajwa dates as Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is traditionally given as a sa' (approx. 2.5–3 kg) of staple food such as dates, barley or wheat, or its monetary equivalent. Ajwa dates are permissible and especially virtuous, though most UK Muslims pay the cash equivalent through HNCO so families overseas can buy local staples.

Support HNCO's Ramadan food drive and Sadaqah programmes — your donation helps deliver dates, food parcels and essentials to families breaking their fast across Pakistan, Bangladesh and the UK.
