This is a type that includes the alms that are given to remove difficulties, philanthropic (to give from mercy to less fortunate people), and giving Halal items in general to any person, etc. This form of charity doesn't necessarily have to include specific categories in order for it to be rewarding and it also does not need to be spent on a Muslim person (although when spent on poor Muslims it is regarded as more rewarding). It can be bequeathed in a person's will (in these cases it would only make up one-third of the deceased individual's entire estate). ## Here is a list of the Sadaqah Nafilah types: - Lillah - Waqf - Aqeeqah - Sadaqah to uplift difficulties - Sadaqah for the redemption of sins - Sadaqah that exceeds the amount associated with Sadaqah Wajibah and Zakat ### Lillah - This is a type of Sadaqah Nafilah, but this type is not linked with a condition where it has to pass into a person's possession since it can also be given to an institute (e.g. hospitals, orphanages, Masajid, etc). ### Waqf - This involves to 'allot' something in the form or a trust to support certain causes. This is done during a person's lifetime or it can be bequeathed in the person's will (it can't exceed one-third of the person's estate). When it is executed, this donation will become Allah's property (which means it is linked to specific rules) and its beneficiaries must remain as those that are named as a cause (e.g. students, orphans, the poor, people from certain localities, etc.) The difference between Waqf and Lillah is that Waqf ownership will not be given to institutes or people and only benefits will be ascribed. Similar to the trusts of today, Waqf, will also require that trustees manage or care for it. ### Aqeeqah - This involves sacrificing one or two animals to provide thanks to Allah when a child is born. From this, members of a locality can also be fed, preference is again for the closest family members and the poor. ### Sadaqah To Remove Difficulties - When donating, one should be asking Allah to make one's deliverance easy. This is explained from the Hadith: al-Tirmidhi, al Bayhaqi - 'Sadaqah soothes the Lord's anger and protects against a bad death'. This is a form of Sadaqah which one can also give as 'Lillah'. ### Sadaqah For The Redemption Of Sins - When donating, one should be asking Allah to forgive their shortcomings. This is understood from this verse: 'Indeed good deeds take away bad deeds'. \[Qur'an, 11:114\] This is a form of Sadaqah that can be given as 'Lillah'. ### Sadaqah that Exceeds the Wajibah Threshold - This Sadaqah is a type associated with the 'essence' of Lillah. Even though it is not regarded as necessary, this type, provided it comes from pure intentions and pure means, will always be acceptable by Allah. It is also a type that Allah described as a 'beautiful debt', as He regards charity as a type of loan that He will repay 'in the hereafter'.
