    Understanding Sadaqah Jariyah

Sadaqah Jariyah is an Islamic term for ongoing charity — a voluntary act of giving whose benefit (and reward) continues long after the original donation. Unlike one-off Sadaqah, Sadaqah Jariyah keeps generating reward for the donor for as long as the project keeps helping people: a water pump still flowing decades later, an orphan still learning to read, a tree still bearing fruit.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “When a person dies, all his deeds end except three: ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.” (Muslim)

Give Sadaqah Jariyah on Behalf of a Loved One

One of the most rewarded ways to give Sadaqah Jariyah is on behalf of a parent, spouse, child or friend — living or deceased. The reward reaches them every time the project benefits someone new. Many of our donors fund a water pump or orphan sponsorship in the name of a relative who has passed, so the reward continues to flow to them indefinitely. You can add a dedication name in the donation widget on this page.

Who Can Give and Who Can Receive?

Anyone can give Sadaqah — there is no minimum, no Nisab and no annual schedule. It can be money, time, a kind word, or removing harm from a road. Monetary Sadaqah is best directed to those most in need:

    • The poor with no reliable income
    • The needy whose income does not meet their basic needs
    • Orphans, widows, the elderly and the displaced
    • Communities affected by disaster or conflict

    When Should You Give Sadaqah?

Sadaqah has no fixed season. Many Muslims give more during Ramadan — the most rewarding month for giving — and during the sacred months such as Muharram and Dhul-Hijjah. Sadaqah is also commonly given to mark a birth, a marriage, recovery from illness, or as a means of thanks to Allah (SWT).

    Why Sadaqah Jariyah Matters

Sadaqah purifies wealth, protects against hardship, and — in the case of Sadaqah Jariyah — keeps earning reward for the donor long after a single gift. It rebalances wealth in the community and binds the Ummah together. Big or small, every act of giving in the name of Allah can change a life.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sadaqah Jariyah in simple terms?

It is a charitable project whose benefit keeps going — like a water pump, a school, or an orchard — so that reward continues to reach the donor long after the donation was made.

How much should I give as Sadaqah Jariyah?

There is no minimum or maximum. A solar water pump can be fully funded from £149; orphan sponsorship starts at £30/month; you can also give any custom amount via the donation widget.

Can I give Sadaqah Jariyah on behalf of someone who has died?

Yes — this is one of the most encouraged forms of giving in Islam. Add the dedication name in the donation form and the reward, by the will of Allah, reaches the named person.

Is Sadaqah Jariyah the same as Zakat?

No. Zakat is an obligatory annual payment of 2.5% on qualifying wealth above the Nisab. Sadaqah Jariyah is entirely voluntary and has no minimum or schedule. See the full Zakat 2026 guide.

How does HNCO use my Sadaqah Jariyah donation?

HNCO operates a 100% donation policy — your full donation goes to the project you select. Core costs are met separately. Read more about how donations are spent.
