Wudu step by step consists of 10 actions: intention and bismillah, washing the hands, rinsing the mouth, cleaning the nose, then the four fard (obligatory) acts — washing the face, washing the arms to the elbows, wiping the head (masah), and washing the feet — followed by wiping the ears and the closing dua. The minimum valid wudu requires only the four fard acts; the full Sunnah wudu includes all 10.

### Key Takeaways

- 4 fard acts from [Quran 5:6](https://qurangallery.app/by-ayah/wudu-tayammum-rules-surah-al-maidah-5-6-quranic-purification): face → arms → head (masah) → feet — omitting any one invalidates wudu
- The full Sunnah sequence is 10 steps — following it earns additional reward beyond the minimum fard
- Each fard body part must be washed at least once; three times is the confirmed Sunnah
- Start with the right side for arms and feet — this is sunnah mu'akkadah, not fard
- The closing dua carries the promise of all eight gates of Jannah ([Sahih Muslim 234](https://sunnah.com/muslim:234))
- Bismillah before wudu is strongly recommended — some scholars hold it obligatory
- Water must reach every part of each fard area — a dry spot the size of a fingernail invalidates wudu

## What are the steps of wudu?

The following sequence follows the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ demonstrated method as recorded in [Sahih al-Bukhari 164](https://sunnah.com/bukhari:164) — the narration of 'Uthman ibn 'Affan performing wudu in front of the Prophet ﷺ and receiving his confirmation. The four fard acts are clearly marked.

1

Niyyah (intention) and Bismillah Sunnah

Form the intention in your heart: you are performing wudu for the sake of Allah in preparation for prayer. Say _Bismillah_ before you start. The intention is internal — it does not need to be spoken. Saying it aloud is permissible but not required.

2

Wash both hands to the wrists Sunnah

Wash the right hand three times from fingertips to wrists, ensuring water reaches between the fingers. Then wash the left hand three times. This preliminary hand wash ensures your hands are clean before they contact the other body parts.

3

Rinse the mouth — madmadah Sunnah mu'akkadah

Cup water in the right hand and rinse the mouth three times, swirling the water to reach all surfaces including between the teeth. Using a miswak or toothbrush at this stage is an additional sunnah.

4

Clean the nose — istinshaq Sunnah mu'akkadah

Sniff water into both nostrils three times using the right hand, then blow it out gently using the left hand. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever performs wudu, let him put water in his nose." (Bukhari 162)

5

Wash the face FARD

Wash the entire face three times — from the hairline at the forehead to below the chin, and from earlobe to earlobe. No part of the face may remain dry. Men with thick beards wash the surface; thin beards require water to reach the skin beneath.

6

Wash both arms to the elbows FARD

Wash the right arm from fingertips to and including the elbow three times — the elbow itself must be washed. Then wash the left arm. Remove rings or jewellery that prevent water reaching the skin. Not a single hair may remain dry.

7

Wipe the head — masah FARD

Wet both hands with fresh water. Place them at the front hairline and sweep backward to the nape of the neck, then return to the front. This counts as one masah — done once, not three times. The minimum amount varies by school: one quarter for Hanafi, full head for Maliki and Hanbali.

8

Wipe the ears Sunnah

Using the same water from the head masah, insert the index fingers into the ear canals and wipe the outer ear with the thumbs once. This is done immediately after the head masah.

9

Wash both feet to the ankles FARD

Wash the right foot from toes to and including the ankle three times, using the little finger to clean between each toe. Then wash the left foot. Pay attention to heels and the spaces between toes — these are the most common dry spots. Ankles must be washed, not merely wet.

10

Closing dua Sunnah mu'akkadah

_Ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh._
I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. Sahih Muslim 234 — the Prophet ﷺ said the eight gates of Jannah are opened for whoever recites this after wudu.

## What are the 4 fard steps in wudu and why do they matter?

The four fard acts are established in Quran 5:6. They are non-negotiable — omitting any one of them, whether deliberately or by accident, invalidates the wudu and it must be repeated. Unlike the sunnah steps, there is no scholarly difference on this point across all four Sunni schools.

Minimum wash

1

**Wash the face**

Hairline to chin, earlobe to earlobe

3

**Wipe the head (masah)**

Varies by school — min ¼ to full head

4

**Wash both feet**

Toes to and including the ankles

Once each foot

## What common mistakes break wudu without people realising?

The most frequent errors found in wudu coaching and Islamic studies programmes:

- **Dry elbow** — the elbow itself must be washed, not just the arm up to it. Many people stop short of the elbow.
- **Dry heels** — the heel is frequently missed. Run water actively over the back of the heel and use the hand to ensure coverage.
- **Between toes** — water does not naturally flow between toes pressed together. Use the little finger to clean each gap.
- **Thick rings blocking arm wash** — rings must be loosened or removed if water cannot reach the skin beneath them.
- **Wiping head three times** — the masah is done once only. Doing it three times is against the Sunnah.
- **Re-washing a body part before finishing** — disturbing the sequence (for Shafi'i and Hanbali followers) or wasting water are common errors.

## What is the dua for wudu?

The dua recited at the conclusion of wudu is narrated in Sahih Muslim 234, on the authority of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab. It is recited while facing the qibla after drying:

> أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
— Sahih Muslim 234

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever among you performs wudu thoroughly, then says \[this dua\], the eight gates of Jannah will be opened for him and he may enter through whichever one he wishes."

## Frequently asked questions about wudu steps

### What are the steps of wudu?

10 steps: (1) niyyah + bismillah, (2) wash hands, (3) rinse mouth, (4) clean nose, (5) wash face (fard), (6) wash arms to elbows (fard), (7) wipe head/masah (fard), (8) wipe ears, (9) wash feet to ankles (fard), (10) closing dua. The four marked as fard are obligatory.

### How many steps is wudu?

The minimum valid wudu requires 4 fard acts. The complete Sunnah wudu includes 10 steps. Performing all 10 earns additional reward; performing only the 4 fard acts produces a valid but minimum wudu.

### What is the dua for wudu?

The closing dua is: Ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh. Recited after completing wudu, it opens the eight gates of Jannah (Sahih Muslim 234).

### How do you start wudu?

Begin with intention (niyyah) in your heart and say Bismillah. Then wash both hands up to the wrists three times before touching any other body part.

### Do you have to say Bismillah before wudu?

Bismillah is strongly recommended (sunnah mu'akkadah). Some scholars hold it obligatory. Omitting it does not invalidate wudu according to the Hanafi and Shafi'i majority positions, but the reward is reduced.

### Can you talk during wudu?

Yes — there is no prohibition on speaking during wudu. However, scholars recommend maintaining quiet mindfulness rather than idle conversation, to preserve the worship quality of the act.
