HNCO assisted Muslim Hands in the ‘Gift of Sight’ Cataract Removal Surgeries x 100 with help from its kind and generous supporters.
Cataract is a most important cause of visual impairment and blindness, which is growing with the age in Pakistan and worldwide. Cloudiness and low vision are the initial symptoms of this disease. Consequently, early detection of cataract and its treatment within 6-12 months is crucial for maximising visual development and preventing amblyopia.
Muslim Hands commented: “In Pakistan, almost 50 percent of people over the age of 40 years are suffering from cataract disease. Cataract is a most important cause of visual impairment and blindness, which is growing with the age in Pakistan and worldwide. Cataract disease is an ageing and congenital problem and if ignored, it results in complication of glaucoma, which is not treatable. Rationalising the high cost of treatment and community awareness for preservation of this disease in AJ&K, various community programs particularly free eye surgical camps are launched each year by Muslim Hands to screen elderly patients affected from various types of preventable or treatable ocular diseases. In these free surgical camps, phacoemulsification surgeries are performed through highly qualified & specialised teams of eye surgeons and medical teams.”
During screening of the patients, the eye specialist identified the persons who are suffering from cataract. Persons who fulfilled the requirements (Pre-requisitions for cataract removal surgery) were then called out for surgery at the operation theatres established at the selected hospitals. The patients were given instructions and pre-required medical care regarding operation and post-operative care.
